The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, under the leadership of Adeleye Ajayi, has reiterated its call for stronger support for press freedom in Nigeria.
According to him, journalists play a vital role in informing the public, holding public officers accountable, and uncovering truths that would otherwise remain hidden.
He said, “Their work enhances transparency and fosters informed public debate, both of which are essential to a healthy democracy.”
Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, World Press Freedom Day is celebrated annually on May 3rd.
The day serves as a reminder of the critical role of the media in democratic societies and reminds governments worldwide to uphold the right to freedom of expression.
The NUJ Lagos State Council urges the Federal government to bolster support for the media industry, ensuring it remains free, independent and pluralistic, which is vital for democracy and national development.

If Nigeria is to truly progress, there should be no harassment or attacks on journalists.
It is well-documented that journalists globally face imprisonment for exposing corruption or reporting human rights abuses.
Tragically, some journalists have lost their lives in the line of duty.
These fallen heroes (journalists) deserve to be honoured, as is done in many other countries.
The NUJ National Secretariat continues to champion the recognition of journalists who suffered for their work.
We call on government to do more to immortalise these champions of press freedom.
While the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is intended to promote transparency by granting citizens, including journalists, the right to request public information, this access is not absolute.
Exemptions and bureaucratic barriers often hinder the flow of information, making true accountability difficult.
The 1999 Constitution as amended empowers journalists to hold the government accountable. However, the reality often falls short of this ideal.
In todayβs digital age, journalists face both new opportunities and fresh challenges.
While technology has improved communication and investigation, it also brings threats to privacy, security and civil liberties.
International organizations such as UNESCO, Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists work tirelessly to defend press freedom, provide resources, report violations and advocate for protective policies.
Freedom of the press is intertwined with other fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and access to information.
When press freedom is suppressed, these rights are also compromised. Thus, protecting journalists and ensuring an enabling environment for media is not just a professional necessity, but a moral and democratic imperative.
World Press Freedom Day is more than a celebration. It is a call to action.
Governments, civil societies, and citizens must unite to protect journalists, resist censorship and support media independence.
A free press is not a luxury; it is a cornerstone of freedom, justice and democracy.
